Black Pepper Essential Oil

Adam Michael has this to say “In the world of aromatherapy black pepper essential oil is of great use when diluted to treat muscular pain, stiffness and fatigue, but it is important to keep the proportion of black pepper in all blends very low, as it is possible to produce irritation by overuse. Use a 1.5% dilution for fevers, 3% dilution in other cases except where prolonged treatment is necessary.

Pepper (Piper nigrum) is a woody climbing plant, native to East Asia. In its natural state it can climb as high as 20 feet, but when grown commercially it is usually pruned to a maximum of 12 feet for convenience. It has been known as both a medicinal and a culinary spice in the Far East for over 4,000 years, and in Europe from at least the 5th century. Like many spices, it was highly prized, and Attila the Hun is reputed to have demanded 3,000 pounds of pepper as part of the ransom for the city of Rome.”

I’m mildly allergic to black pepper, so I have to treat this material with extra care. This offering is a great introduction to this prized ingredient and I strongly recommend buying it before you commit to the richer, and much harder to handle, Black Pepper Absolute. Both can sit together in your organ, though, for an improved range of scents.

Combine it with cloves, cinnamon and cardamon to create an unexpected tri-dimensional layer to spicy creations. It can be used to add a savory edge to mossy accords and can take your Amyris or Australian Sandalwood two steps closer to the scent of Oud (the Black Pepper Absolute is better for this purpose alone, though).
