Cypress Absolute

Eleonora Scalseggi has this to say “Cypress absolute, together with fir, pine and juniper absolute is the proof of coniferous materials’ vast potential as perfumery ingredients, despite remaining still fundamentally underestimated, and truly undeservedly so. Often overlooked and easily dismissed because their essential oils seem a better fit for alpine-themed functional products rather than fine fragrance, these coniferous materials completely transform into something very special and full of character when turned into absolutes.

Cypress absolute is no different. The essential oil is certainly not unpleasant, but it doesn’t remotely possess the characterful intensity of this material, nor its complexity. Deliciously sappy and jammy like most conifer-derived absolutes, cypress absolute is also gently smoky, incense-y and dry woody, leaning somewhat in the direction of our gin-dry juniper absolute, green, slightly bitter, and with a little touch of wood dust that once diluted down and applied to my skin reminds me also of a gentler shade of nootka Essential Oil.

As such it can work very well in woody accords, more so those with a smoky twist or an incense-y vibe, with cedarwoods, with incense wood (possibly its soulmate), hinoki, frankinceses, with labdanums and overall, with Mediterranean and Far-East-themed compositions, keeping in mind that like with our gin-dry juniper absolute, this material has a more serious demeanour about it, that imparts it an almost spiritual, meditative character.

It is perhaps for this precise scent profile and for the tree’s shape itself, all reaching towards the sky, that since very ancient times cypresses have been associated with yearning for the divine, along with being used as a landmark for spiritual, prestigious or otherwise important places. In fact, the latter is a very well alive tradition here Tuscany, to the extent that cypresses are still to date considered an outright symbol of our region.”

Please note that this absolute is only listed on a trial basis at the moment, and as such is in practice a limited-edition material. We might review this decision in the near future, also based on the support this absolute will receive from our customers. So, if you purchased this and loved it, please let us know with a review. Thank you 🙂
