Sandalwood essential oil is obtained from the trees of the genus Santalum and has been a part of the religious and spiritual traditions of Southern Asia for thousands of years. Its rich, creamy, warm, sweet, balsamic, woody fragrance is universally admired and the extreme demand for its wood and oil has resulted in the East Indian sandalwood tree being listed as an endangered species. True Santalum album sandalwood oil can now only be legally produced in India under strict government control. In perfumery, sandalwood essential oil is universally used as the finest fixative and blender. It harmonises with the other elements of a blend seamlessly, helping to bring the perfume together as well as to hold back the lighter oils that dissipate quickly. Sandalwood oils provide a quality and richness to a perfume unlike any other oil.
