Adam Michael has this to say “Clary sage essential oil has uplifting and relaxing properties. It encourages sleep and is said to promote dreaming. Soothes, relaxes and warms. Described as a very good muscle relaxant and a key essential oil for PMT. Clary sage can have a profoundly euphoric effect so do use with care.
Clary sage is used in aromatherapy in preference to sage (Salvia officinalis) because whilst clary shares many of the properties of sage, the essential oil contains a far lower proportion of thujone. The essential oil which is distilled from the flowers, is helpful for treating all kinds of stress and tension and is a particularly powerful muscle relaxant, that has a wonderfully herbaceous and fresh tea character with floral and nutty nuance. As it is relaxing, warming and antispasmodic it is helpful in treating digestive problems, especially cramps or griping colicky pains. Either gentle massage over the stomach and abdomen, or hot compresses of clary will be very comforting.”
Botanical Name: Salvia sclarea
Origin: France

I grow Clary Sage at my garden and my fresh stuff is never as thrilling and beautiful as this offering. Maybe my ‘Godzilla Rosemary’ is overshadowing it and robbing its nutrients, or maybe I’m too spoiled by this EO.
The way I see it, this is not something that should take the reins, but be used to create effects. This EO is more diffusive and salty than others that I have encountered, that lean towards the woody spectrum, and I much appreciate this characteristic. Adding a 1% drop of Clary Sage to a Vanilla based creation was one of my luckiest attempts ever, but pairing this with Geranium Bourbon created one of my favorite scents in the world.

French Clary Sage is simpler and somehow drier than Russian Clary Sage (also Hermitage’s one), which spectacular smell is on the top of all Clary sages for me.
But this Clary Sage works better as a companion scent with Ylang Ylang, for example, it plays easy without dominating in composition with exotic flower scent. Great in herbal compositions, again, easily adding a dry sweet hay-ish note and helping to maintain overall harmony.

Love. Love. Love. This. Fresh mown hay combined with signature sage’s herbaceousnes, very soothing and wholesome scent, ads volume and a criptic twist to any herbal, tea, Chamomile and/or Lavender creations – works great with Lavender Absolute.
