Adam Michael has this to say “This material is obtained by making incisions into the trunk of the Pistacia lentiscus tree. Liquid oleo-resin seeps out the incisions, once hardened this material is collected and steam distilled to produce essential oil. The colour is crystal clear and of a pourable viscosity. It is worth noting essential oil is also produced by steam distilling the leaves. The aroma is clean, balsamic, turpentine crisp, dry woody and forest morning pine needle fresh. Therapeutically this material is antimicrobial, antiseptic, antispasmodic, astringent, diuretic and expectorant.”
Arctander has this to say “It is occasionally used in citrus colognes, lavender-fougeres, etc. as a top note ingredient, lending a certain naturalness and bitter-balsamic tonality to these perfume types.”
Botanical Name: Pistacia lentiscus L
Origin: Morocco

Mastic was a new material for me. I used it as modifier in the top note of my Province’s fields perfume. On the top of its lasting flowery heart was ” a natural burst of bergamot, Petitgrain and distilled lemon”. Just a drop of Mastic has made this “bursting” top to be deep and natural. Just a finishing touch, but what a transformation.

This mastic perfectly captures the scent of the forest. It reminded me of how my hands would smell after spending a day climbing trees as a kid–like tree sap, pine needles, and cedar boughs. Slightly camphorous and turpentine notes, as the description says. I’d recommend this for any blend that calls for an airy burst of nature and the outdoors.
