Adam Michael has this to say “Mandarin essential oil is available in three different variants, green, yellow and red. The natural chemistry and aroma of all three mandarins is different due to the stage of ripening of the fruit.
In this instance, for green mandarin oil unripe mandarins are used, usually the ones that are thinned out from the plant, be it because there are too many and the plant wouldn’t manage to bear them all, or because they are ill shaped and so on. The resulting essential oil possesses a natural chemistry that is different to that of the yellow and red fruits which will follow in later months. More specifically, green mandarin essential oil contains fewer natural sugars which results in a cleaner, more astringent, sharper aroma compared to the red variant obtained from fully ripened mandarins.
The cold pressed essential oil is then concentrated by removing the terpenes, thus making this oil not only much richer and fuller in aroma but also much more stable than any regular citrus oil and less prone to harmful oxidations, making this perfect for perfumers and for cosmetic preparations.
The resulting aroma of this 5 fold concentrated green mandarin essential oil is bursting with bright, fridge fresh mandarin qualities from the start and underpinned with a delightful green citrus tang throughout. Green-Yellow to Cola-Brown in colour subject to volume/weight and of a pourable viscosity. This folded green mandarin essential oil imparts a refreshing effect within floral bouquets, great for simple citrus accords that require additional diffusion, pairs well with citrus naturals, vetiver oils, rose absolutes, jasmines, neroli aromatics, lavender, yuzu, sandalwoods.”

Finally, a superior quality folded green mandarin oil! I typically used a Firmenich 4x produced in Brazil, which I then used to benchmark other folded green mandarin oils against. That was until I tried Adam’s 5x, and wow, this is magnificent! It easily replaces the Firmenich product for benchmarking and will be my go-to from now on.
Thanks to it being a cold pressed folded oil, it remains alive, sparkling, bitter green, tart, neroli-floral, with a rich depth without any terpenic harshness. Almost as though you’re peeling a green mandarin and inhaling the freshly expressed oils. It doesn’t get any better than this!

I’m reviewing this concentrated green mandarin oil not as an ingredient for making perfume, but purely as an essential oil for scenting a room — and honestly, I think it’s pretty much made for that purpose.
To be fair, citrus peel oils in general — and mandarin oils in particular — have never really wowed me as room scents. For my taste, they fade way too fast and just don’t have enough punch. That’s not the oils’ “fault” — it’s simply how they are — but for this use, I’ve always found regular cold-pressed oils less than ideal. (That’s one reason I adore petitgrain oils: they have way more presence and depth in the air.)
But since discovering these concentrated citrus oils — especially the two types of concentrated mandarin — I’ve had to rethink my opinion. With these, you can scent a room in a way I didn’t think was possible before. The aroma isn’t just much stronger and way longer-lasting, it also smells more genuine to me. They capture that bright, fruity, slightly aldehydic note of freshly peeled mandarins perfectly — something I’ve never gotten from regular cold-pressed mandarin oil. I suspect the difference is that cold-pressed oils oxidize too quickly, which alters their scent, while the concentrated ones hold onto that fresh profile for far longer.
Bottom line: Green and Red Mandarin 5-fold are, in my book, perfect for scenting a space. I think very few people could resist their cheerful, uplifting — yet also calming — vibe.

woah! something i would have never purchased on my own, generously included as a sample in my last order. i love when recommendations like this all of a sudden expand so many possibilities… this is just so beautiful, full of bright awareness, with that “prismatic” quality that certain jasmine and white ambergris can have. gemlike. none of the super terpy notes than can make other citruses challenging. this got addictive quickly!

So simple, clear, immediate and yet complex, with nuance and depth. My favourite citrus oil – and very suitable for modern masculine fragrances, very youthful and original in a casual way.

This Green Mandarin sings with intense fresh green citrus vigour. Layers of dark green juicy lime skip along with lemon, blood orange, grapefruit, petitgrain and kumquat. A joyously juicy and fully alive experience – invigorating, joyful yet also grounding. An exceptionally vivid and true-to-life Green Mandarin. I love it. Exceptional quality!

Almost a perfume in its own right due to the floral elements that dance on the pond of deep green juiciness. Such a humble material that blows me away every time I experience it by surprising me with its complexity. And nowhere can this be obtained with the degree of freshness as here at Hermitage at the source of all Italian citrus delights.
