Adam Michael has this to say “Birch sweet essential oil is commonly used to relieve pain and excels at treating sore muscles, sprains and painful joints due to the anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic properties. Methyl salicylate works by passing through the skin and entering the tissues where it inhibits the formation of prostaglandins, thereby reducing inflammation and pain very quickly.
Birch sweet has a similar natural chemistry to wintergreen. The main constituent is methyl salicylate and this is a superb pain reliever with a pleasant aroma. Handle with care and dilute down very well before massage. The aroma is fresh, slightly sweet with a iced mint nuance. This birch sweet essential oil is steam distilled from the bark of the tree. Clear to light yellow in colour and of a pourable viscosity.”
Botanical Name: Betula lenta
Origin: USA

What a powerful scent! As mentioned in the description, I found this useful for pain relief, and instantly reminded me of the deep heat cream.

I do massage regularly, and have previously used a gaultery (wintergreen) for massage blends. My masseur recommended replacing it with sweet birch oil, which is similar in properties but has a nicer aroma. Although in general the aroma of both oils is distinctly medicinal, rather pungent, I liked the smell of birch oil more, and the effect of 1.5% oil in the massage oil was impressive. Sweet birch oil perfectly relieves muscle pain and spasms, massage gives a feeling of warmth and relief in the back. I also use birch oil to rub my knee joints.
