Sandalwood Legends of Papua CO2
Adam Michael has this to say “This is my second Papuan sandalwood, from the same source as the first, and without doubt, this is another masterpiece that some could be forgiven for thinking is actually some type of a re-release of sandalwood India Gold from Christmas Day 2019.
You see this has almost exactly the same DNA as that 2019 Sandalwood relic of which gave life to my deep dive into the world of top level sandalwoods. In the past six years I have sourced and released countless top-tier sandalwoods fit for gods and priced low – so that everyone can have at least a once in a lifetime experience of what top table sandalwood really is – Sri Lanka, India, Indonesia, Japan, New Caledonia, some custom, some via private collections, some on the site, some never making it to the site and even throw in a few 100 year aged Mysores – and I promise you none of it has ever come from any of the French based corporates that obtain piss poor malnutrioned sandalwood from trees never given the time to properly develop in the plantations. Yes I said it because I want to say it, and it’s the truth.
So the profile, from the bottle, bright, warm, rich, creamy, a touch animalic, a hit of atlas cedarwood, with lots of full bodied, rounded, sensual clouds of vintage vibe sandalwood. Nothing harsh, nothing fatty, little to anything nutty, as masculine as it gets, zero anything feminine, a workhorse on strip and skin (my skin type 9.5 hours from a generous swipe) and a profile that would warrant a seat at the big boy table of top tier sandalwoods despite not being blessed with prized percentages of either alpha or beta santalol – collectively 55.15% all in. In fact the totals santalol content comes in at 75.71% and incredibly this isn’t overly aged either, it was actually produced in 2024 and yet it’s an absolutely sexy full bodied mouthwatering sandalwood that truly pitter patters into gourmand territory at times and even displays floral nuances.
On paper, the stats are nothing to write home about and yet the profile is bonified rock-star sandalwood that even the toughest aromatic critiques and fancy pants perfumers with big egos would struggle to find any fault in. In fact if I wasn’t telling you this, you would EASILY think this was a plus 80% santalols A and B sandalwood. This stuff at times even feels as though it’s been mixed with our ambrettolide as the musky facets are off the charts at certain stages of the heart and base – and yet it’s a physical impossibility as that stuff costs much more than this sandalwood per kilo right now as I type – and I’m not talking about the fermented junk offered by the American natural isolates operator and peddled by the most famous all naturals perfumer, but instead the legit fractionated ambrettolide obtained from ambrette seed absolute via the European source – who actually excels with that specific product and of which we offer.
It’s a weird situation as I’m left perplexed, and I have questioned the source asking if they possibly gave me something else. For the price I’m charging I know when you evaluate this that it may look like you have purchased stolen goods, but it’s legit and I don’t know what else to add other than to say Merry Christmas and enjoy the situation as this hammers into oblivion anything else in the same price point and sincerely this can hold its own against 400 and 500 euro a tola bottle sandalwoods from India. Even that stunning aged austrocaledonicum we had with a plus 90% santalols content at the time doesn’t outperform this Sandalwood Legends Papua CO2 – no way, not a little bit, not now, not ever.
The musky facets are here in abundance and entwined within a smooth butter sweet soft sandal woody body that also has touches of musk that I associate within the heart of aged angelica root. Simply this is gorgeous, use it today, use it tomorrow, make it the centrepiece of your most epic sandalwood perfume release, buy a bottle and age it for another ten years, buy a kilo if needed, go wild, but basically, it’s a no brainer, and a fail safe sandalwood purchase.
For sandalwoods, be better than the corporates and all the brown-nosing minions selling the corporates sandalwoods by name online. Because this Paupan will make a light snack of anything they offer sandalwood wise.
Uses, now it’s broken-record time for sure as sandalwood ultimately has so many friends that it plays well with, from animalic notes, narcotic florals, of course roses and jasmines, citrus, green notes, fruity and aldehydic materials, the list goes on and on, sandalwood is one of the most versatile materials and most impressive fixatives too.”
