Storax Resinoid
Adam Michael has this to say “Storax resinoid is produced by removing the bark from the Liquidambar orientalis tree and making incisions into the sap wood. The crude then oozes out and is collected in containers placed at the bottom of the tree. At this stage the material is full of impurities, borderline impossible to work with, contains water and must be cleaned. Various options are available thereafter and Hermitage material is alcohol extracted so technically speaking this material is a resin-absolute.
This material is of a pourable treacle consistency and is a heart-warming amber colour. The aroma is incense rich, oriental, syrup sweet, with spiced cinnamon and leather nuances. Comments regarding vanilla nuances maybe true but are not present in this material. Styrax Resinoid is an excellent fixative that works in harmony with many oils of a wood, floral and fruit nature such as mimosa, frankincense, myrrh, sandalwood, jasmine and yuzu.”
Mark Evans has this to say “Richly rounded, animalic, leather, buttery, resins, amber, floral, sweet, benzoin, balsamic, spicy – just a quick impression of this precious material sourced from Liquidambar orientalis trees in the Republic of Honduras. There are three varieties of styrax, there’s this one which is also known as Asian styrax and also storax. Then there’s American styrax from Liquidambar styraciflua and then there are the black granules from Styrax officinalis. Each smells different, but this Asian styrax is, in my opinion, the most exotic, luscious and deeply rich. The most leathery of them all, very long lasting and the perfect base note ingredient for Orientals and gourmands and perfect for amber notes.”

If you love resins, especially frankincense, benzoin, labdanum and myrrh, you’ll love this. Also goes really nice with tuberose and jonquille absolute.

I love resins and this is one of my favorite scents in the world. It is made of syrupy, sticky, vibrant and in-your-face warmth, but with the sufficient amount of elegance to avoid making a mess.
This offering by Hermitage is more than versatile. Add a bit of cinnamon and clove and you get a Christmass-like daydream in your hands (that will last a whole day, if not further). Add pale woods and you will dry it enough to become serious and opulent. Add patchouli and you’ll feel like you just found molten love.
And since it is pretty sweet, go nuts and try bitter herbs, Cade or Birch Tar, dark woods, Oud, whatever you feel like throwing at it. This Styrax will smile gently and make everything beautiful and cozy for you, with varying degrees of complexity and beauty.

Oh boy, oh boy ! If you are looking for a castoreum-leather note, then you have knocked on the right door… I am trying to tame this wild (yet beautiful) beast with other resinoids. I am currently working on a leather base and I just found out that this strong scent works very well with labdanum abs and other aroma chemicals : safraleine, iso butyl quinoline. My comment on this resinoid : beware of wild animals !

This one has a really beautiful balsamic quality to it; olive notes galore! I have learnt to avoid using it with indolic musks and animalic notes, but it can add an interesting facet to sweeter florals or salty materials like zdravetz or seaweed.

A non liquid resin mass, in need of dilution in ethanol to be workable. It starts with an massive animalic, leathery note. At the same time, strangely, a top of green character. It has this powerful, deep scent, on the border between harsh and perfumic. Very useful if you want character in your blends. Obviously an importand ingredient in simulated non-animalic castoreum blends.

This is a smooth styrax and blends far more easily than others I’ve worked with, it’s almost floral yet retains that resinous edge without being scratchy. Top marks!
