Adam Michael has this to say “Benzoin resinoid has the ability to stimulate at the same time as soothe, it seems to ‘get things moving’ in the body, whether it is clearing mucus, stimulating the circulation, expelling gas or increasing the flow of urine. It is very comforting for griping pains in the stomach, and for urinary tract infections.
Like myrrh and frankincense, benzoin has been used for thousands of years as an ingredient of incense, and to drive out evil spirits, and like these two it is both soothing and stimulating. It is also very warming, and this makes it particularly helpful for colds, flu, coughs and sore throats. Its use in the form of Friar’s Balsam, as an inhalation for sore throats and loss of voice, is probably its best known virtue.
50% Benzoin resinoid diluted in 50% DPG, This material has quite a thick consistency but is still easy to work with. Should it be a little difficult just keep it near a warm source for 5-10 minutes and it will be easy to work with. (Maybe place the bottle on a radiator but make sure the cap is on! or submerge the bottle, up to the neck, in a bowl of hot water.)”

Benzoin may be the resin I appreciate the least, but it is an outstanding material. This offering makes this tricky substance much easier to work with in exchange for some of the natural’s oomph, a trade-off I’m satisfied to take. It reminds me of ‘champagne’, whereas Styrax makes me think of brandy and Labdanum evokes whiskey to my mind.
It is somewhat sparkly, understated and, as a friend says, shy, carrying its duties as a long-lasting uncomplicated base note with aplomb. Adding a bit of Moss and highly diluted Black Pepper Absolute to it creates the illusion of bubbles exploding in your nose, making the champagne aspect shine. My favorite combination, though, is mixing it with Iris and/or ionones for a treat of olfactory plush that lasts for hours.

This is a lushly sweet resin, beautifully rounded with notes of chocolate, ripe fruits, vanilla, honey and hints of patchouli. It has a warm, rounded and plush enveloping character. Long lasting and perfect for sweet oriental or gourmand accords this is a joy in the bottle. It is so rich it can almost perform as a perfume on its own.

One of the first resinous materials I started out with, its versatility really surprised me. If you’re not careful, it can really overtake a perfume if you aren’t wise with it, and it still dominates for about a month until it macerates, but once it melds together with the other materials it becoems truly beautiful. Works well with orange, but my favourite was a petitgrain and carnation creation I made. Avoid using it with cedrat, this combo smells like a hangover.
