Eleonora Scalseggi has this to say “Petitgrain essential oil is another invaluable material for both the perfumer and the aromatherapist obtained by steam distilling the leaves and twigs of the bitter orange tree. Apparently in the past distillation occurred when little unripe orange fruits were on the branches, thus the name “petit-grain”.
A top to middle note with very high odour intensity, it needs to be used with a light hand: a little goes a long way. Despite its slightly harsh opening, this oil adds green citrus leaves, neroli-floral and light soapy notes to compositions, with elegant light woody undertones. Add just a touch in neroli accords and you will be in the presence of a blossoming orange tree, the freshness of its lush foliage, the timeless beauty of the heady flowers.
Minute additions will also help citrus and woody materials to blend harmoniously, imparting naturalness and coherence to the whole composition.
Boasting linalyl acetate, geranyl acetate along with linalool, nerol, nerolidol and limonene (among others) in its natural chemistry, this petitgrain essential oil is a staple material for the aromatherapist too, helping treating acne and oily skin without causing irritation, and also proving very useful for treating insomnia and nervous exhaustion thanks to its deeply calming effect on both body and mind. A must-have essential oil.”

Ah, Petitgrain! So joyful, so special and, yet, so humble! While the high-octane Oranges joust with fury and Neroli commands all the attention at the court by simply being immaculately pretty, Petitgrain carries its duties like the highest ranked noble vassal to a powerful sire would: fast and unquestionably.
This offering could work as a complete perfume, per se, if it was just a bit longer lasting, sadly not something one can demand from such a cheerful material. While I do prefer the Petitgrain Corsega because of its woodier aspect, this variety is more versatile and a must-have in any perfumer’s organ.
When dealing with oranges, though, I lean on the conservative side and don’t go crazy with blends. Bitter or Sweet Orange, Neroli, Orange Flower, maybe some light Cedarwood and you’re done. No need to get fancy here, since oranges are made of encapsulated happiness and happiness is all one can truly hope to achieve in life.

A wonderful, high quality petitgrain. Woody, floral and citrus all rolled into one material.

Petitgrain essential oil is fresh uplifting but in the same time calming. A good ingredient for oily blemished skin and anxiety.
