Mark Evans has this to say “This natural extract of rhodinol from citronella has a bright, petal fresh, wonderfully well-balanced and rounded rose fragrance. I would consider this an essential ingredient for the creation of any rose accord and also perfect to use just by itself when needing to integrate a beautiful, true to life rose into other florals or pretty much any style of perfume for any function.
Rhodinol natural isolate is often named laevo-citronellol (l-citronellol) as that is its main component along with geraniol. Getting the balance of these two molecules correct is what makes a great rose aroma – too much of one or the other can result in a scratchy, harsh lemony note.
There are a select few flowers that have been the foundation stones for perfumery throughout the ages – orange blossom, muguet and jasmine – but the rose has been and continues to be the most essential. Many perfumers have said that they add a little rose in everything they do and I am no exception. We are lucky to have access to this incredibly well produced, all natural isolate to achieve this aim beautifully.”
Extracted from citronella essential oil.

This material to me smells pretty much like very clean and rounded citronella, and not very much like a rose. Perhaps it only begins to create the rose impression when paired with the proper geranium or geraniol, as the description states.
I would have given three or even two stars, were it not for the magic that occurs in the drydown when worn neat on the skin. Suddenly, the distinctive citronella note fades, and what surfaces is a powerful vaporous note that is at once juicy, bitter, and resinous, with hints of sweet ether like you’d find in coffee blossom absolute or in freshly crushed Mexican sage flowers. The overall effect is something I’ve only experienced with certain Ouds, and I quite like it. I wish it were that way from the start.
In any case, if you’re looking for something to create a rose accord, then I hope you know what you’re doing.

This is a true beauty : you will get the super fresh essence of the best rose oil. Try to mix it with a heavy floral heart (jasmine & ylang) or even a light one (neroli & rose). This wil get you a superb and sweet floral heart.
