7th November at 11.35am. Update. First, Hermitage Oils website is now closed for the rest of 2023. No more orders are being accepted and all countries have been removed from the website at checkout, to prevent orders from being placed whilst we are off work. Apologies if I sound like a broken record, but politely I have received so many emails asking about placing orders already. I am now putting an out of office message in place on the email and website contact page. As soon as all orders have been delivered - we are then properly off work for the rest of 2023. Sincerely, we need a proper break as the stress of this year has become too great. On a brighter note, the following SDS are now uploaded onto the website and available to clients by logging in to your account and going to the section titled SDS (assuming you have purchased the product) ... Blue Lotus Absolute, Bergamot Mint E.O, Clove Bud Absolute, Apple Liquid, Chamomile Roman E.O, Cognac Green Signature Gold E.O, Costus Root E.O, Eucalyptus Absolute, Cocoa Absolute Signature Gold, Geranium Chinese E.O, Frankincense Rivae E.O, Buddha Wood E.O and Cedarwood Himalayan E.O. Adam Michael has this to say “Balsam tolu absolute is mainly used as a fixative for perfumers and the aroma is reminiscent of benzoin and peru balsam, largely because the chemistry is not overly different. Balsam tolu absolute contains benzyl-benzoate, benzyl-cinnamate and benzoic acid amongst other constituents. I would advise perfumers to dilute this material in ethanol at upto 50% to make it easier to use.”
Arctander has this to say “This material gives excellent effects in hyacinth, tuberose, gardenia, honeysuckle, stephanotis and other sweet floral fragrances…it is, in general, an interesting item for use in all types of fantasy perfumes, ‘tabac’, ‘leather’, aldehydic perfume, etc.”

Very rich and sophisticated, more intriguing than its cousin benzoin, it makes a great ambery basenote. I diluted mine at 10% in alcohol for an easier use.

Tolu balsam is a wonderful fixative that doesn’t overpower your composition like benzoin would – comforting smoothness with a hint of bitterness and subtle cinnamon-spice.

Tolu Balsam, what a great guest at a party! Deep and interesting without stealing the show! The depth and softness has me wanting to reach for this absolute often when blending and so, having to resist. However, I would suggest that the proverbial futility of resistance is most relevant in this case as Tolu is a wonderful base on which to build astonishing woodies, strong florals and herbies.

Move over benzoin, tolu is in town! Whilst we should never dismiss the ubiquitous ambery brilliance of benzoin, there’s something about it’s sister Tolu that feels cleaner, suaver and sexier. It also possesses the powdery qualities of Balsam of Peru, but without any smoke. Don’t let the soft touch fool you though, it has next level fixative properties, so much so that if not dosed carefully will dampen down everything else in the composition, more so than benzoin I’d say.

This is really growing on me, much more interesting than I was expecting. It has gorgeous depth, reminds me of the night time breeze of honeysuckle through my bedroom window, vanilla, caramels, gorgeous mixed spices, fruitcakes, candied peel, taste if fresh cinnamon bark. I’m kind of mesmerized by it as it changes between all its characteristics!

This is lovely material. It has a woody dimension but is also light and sweet. I have actually added this to all my compositions and it seems to me that it settles the perfume in a subtle manner without really revealing its own scent until an hour after the composition has been applied to my skin. Great stuff.

I like this better than benzoin, mostly because of the floral cinnamon warmth it gives off. Well-suited to florals and spices that need a certain lift without going too sweet or smokey.
