Thai Oud Royal (2 YEAR AGED)

Adam Michael has this to say “This is another stunningly beautiful Thai oud e.o, showcasing a traditional profile along with a few quirks to help stand it apart from the crowd. If this is your first time with oud or you consider yourself an oud connoisseur, I really think a bottle of this in everyone’s inventory is a good thing.

The viscosity here is comparable to the majority of wild ouds I have now handled, so of a pourable, thinner than usual (plantation standards) viscosity but the power is off the charts. There are a plethora of notes here – on the strip this is a really warm scent profile with lots of heat that tip-toes into red chili territory crossed with crushed green peppercorns and finished with a dash of roasted coffee. There are the usual suspects here in play too of course, so this is very woody, ranging from dry to damp, to piercing medicinal clean with a big injection of savoury sweet notes that vibe into gourmand territory entwined with fruity syrupy qualities.

And yes we have animalic character here galore, absolutely yes – its like a mash up of grounded castoreum, hyraceum, horse hair, aged leathers and fire tree resin. There is also what my brain registers as a hot spicy orange note that runs through the very core of this experience and goes beyond being tagged solely with the  fruity classification – as its very foody orientated and reminds me of the night air when visiting markets throughout South East Asia. This is a beast, a beautiful mighty beast.

In fact inhaling solely from the bottle is another experience too, as I pick out the smell of cold Autumn air combined with lychee juice, eucalyptus honey and something that reminds me of how chocolate buttons tasted as a child. And inhaling slowly you realise how smooth this scent profile is – despite having strong animalic notes present, they are very considerate and rounded, always finishing with a sweet fruity kick from the classic Thai fruity qualities most of us love dearly. To sum up, this one is best of friends with fellow ouds, woods, mosses, resins, spices, and plays nice with heady through to rich floral scents – think jasmines – especially grandiflorum, ylang, pink and white lotus, frangipani, champaca and so on. Straight forward to understand and thus utilise within perfume compositions. Plus this is a great price point for a 2 year aged oud. Highly recommended”.
