Adam Michael has this to say “The aroma of styrax absolute is described as woody-vanilla, leathery, animalic-castoreum, balsamic. In a leathery compound, this product brings a modern animalic and elegant note. Produced by fractionation of styrax absolute in order to respond to applicable regulations. This advanced process results in a material with a very animalic tone. The suggested use in cream is at 0.5%, shampoo at 0.3% and fine fragrance at up to 2%.”
Botanical Name: Liquidambar orientalis
Origin: Republic of Honduras

Animalic, leathery, and rather elegant at the same time. It pairs very well with any floral material and adding a depth and complexity.

Animalic ? Yes, but not that much. To me, this is a sweet version of an old fashioned musk composition (musk ambrette & musk ketone) with a hint of vanilla. To me, this one remains on the non-offensive side of Styrax : mellow and sweet, it would perfectly pair with benzoin and myrrh.

Though Asian (Turkish) styrax is traditionally preferred, the American (mostly Honduran) material is now more common, and the two resulting absolutes are more similar than the essential oils. The unpleasant, gasoline-like odour of styrene, so present in unaged American styrax oil, is here removed during solvent extraction, resulting in a material with a surprisingly fresh, smooth, animalic top note, a balsamic, spicy (cinnamon), floral (lilac, hyacinth) heart and leathery, ambery dry down.

Considering that this is an absolute,I was expecting this to be alcohol soluble, which was not the case .
Turned cloudy, the scent is nice though..
Dear Adam I have send an email regarding this, but I got no answer.

My first time smelling styrax so I don’t know how it smells with all the styrene included. I quite like this, to me it smells like leathery cinnamon with a hint of something floral and industrial. I don’t find it that animalic. It is sweet but not as much as benzoin or peru balsam. It’s maybe a little bit odd on it’s own but I think it would be very interesting in combination with some other materials, especially other balsams.
