Hermitage Hyraceum Absolute

Adam Michael has this to say “Whilst much later than planned, we now have our own production of hyraceum absolute (04/08/25), produced from the fossilised Hyraceum/Africa Stone we trade. And for ease of use we offer this diluted in DPG (30% absolute).

The outcome is a perfectly soluble absolute that smells exactly like the fossilised pieces we offer. Maybe I have been around this material too long because I know most sum up Hyraceum as smelling faecal and to cover myself I will say this smells faecal, even though I actually believe this is so much more and I honestly find this profile incredibly joyous opposed to offensive.

To my nose this is a little smoky, strong leathery, grey ambergris, cresole, in parts reminding me of hindi ouds, and I pick out deer musk and castoreum tincture tonalities throughout. Within the profile I find tobacco, nutty and floral bouquet effects fluttering in and out of detection along with some shoe-polish nuances.

Regarding uses, I am recycling what I wrote when we used to offer this from another producer……..If you want to build your own true to life deer musk accords without the animal cruelty then this absolute can be a brilliant building block, also useful for injecting more realism and intensity within leather creations, generally blends well with the usual animalic suspects through to agrestic naturals and can be called upon when trying to build oud creations, working especially well if the oud creations focal point is that of a melody of heavy woods.”

We also sell hyraceum in its fossilised form here. And we also offer well aged hyraceum tincture here. Both are also of good educational value when learning about hyraceum aroma profile.
