Kambuja Jungle Oud E.O (2 YEAR AGED)
Adam Michael has this to say “As soon as I inhaled this oud, I wanted it at all costs. Hailing from North Cambodia, produced in the Jungle – so with minimum human involvement and this is technically organic material without the certification. From the bottle this one is very old woody through to ancient relic esq woody, a little astringent, piercing with some potent animalic facets in the background. I think those new to oud would struggle with the animalic tonalities as they do grow in strength across the first several hours or so with the woody components being initially more in the way of a background noise. Note – these animalic notes are not of the same power as smelling plantation Indian offerings!
The animalic facets to my nose are heavily castoreum themed with touches of Indian Acacia catechu resin and creole. Here we also have warming qualities comparable to red chilli, black pepper and white pepper corns. And then bam, lots of sticky fruity exotic plumes start flooding the profile, infusing with the woody and animalic facets and resulting in this truly wow oud experience. Yes, its jungle plantation, but don’t be a snob, if you are a perfumer, always remember and respect that plantation ouds are the oud workhorses and properly utilised can and will transform your compositions into long lasting beasts.
The fruity aspects here are very classic Thai style orientated and with time showcase some incense and floral touches too.
On the strip, the dry down goes on literally for weeks and when you finally arrive there, I would describe the experience as being comparable to smelling heavily aged Virginia cedarwood, incense – think Mexican White Copal, aged sandalwoods and the most glorious clean animalic facets that are better associated with clean smelling Hindi oud profiles. Beautiful plantation oud, wonderful development, outstanding longevity and highly recommended to all”.

There is a special place in my heart for all Cambodian Ouds, since my first Oud oil 28 years ago was from that land. While inhaling and evaluating this wonderful specimen, I can not help but compare it to another ‘Hermitage’ much beloved Cambodi Oud (8 years aged) – that one was a brash and cheeky ‘party animal’ with loud unabashed expressions of animal secetions all over it, which I called upon the first imporession ‘Heated Jazz Jam Session’.
In comparison, this one is refined, cool and even somewhat melancholic ‘Late Chat Baker’ or ‘Miles Davis Blues’ –
this Kambuja Oud fuses all the facets in much smoother way: its animalic ‘horse-stable’ (not ‘barnyard’) facet is way more reined-in and blends in harmoniously with other characteristic notes as antique woods, varnish, deep-forest mushroomy must, medicinal fruit liquor and magic air – all present here in more refined, sophisitcated form. In fact, I would describe the curve of the presence of the animalic tonality as some initial splash that rather swiftly subsides and then merges seamlessly with all the other notes to create truly fine, captivating and overall gorgeous scent – to the hypnotizing effect.
I’d say that the whole evocative impression from this Oud is ‘The Enchanted Ancient Forest’ – inhabited by elves, fauns, nymphs, satyrs, magic mushrooms and wizards. Love it!
