28th October: Papuan Sandalwood – same batch as what sold out – now available to pre-order. Delivery due with us on Friday 31st October. Orders that include this aromatic will be dispatched from Monday 3rd November. Thank you, Adam.
8th October: SOLD OUT in just over 48 hours. The good news is more of this exact batch is available and I am trying to buy it now from the producer. So within the next 3 to 4 weeks this Papuan will be available again. After that has sold out, the next batch will be sold under this listing and if needed my product content will be addressed accordingly to reflect any minor changes in profile. I am extremely happy with this producer and all being well Papuan Sandalwood (S.album) will be a long term fixture at Hermitage Oils. Finally for now, for those who have purchased, the SDS, IFRA 51 Statement and Fragrance Allergens are available by logging into your account.
Adam Michael has this to say “So it’s October 6th 2025 as I type and today I now have Papuan Sandalwood in my collection, THE KING OF SANDALWOOD and the creamiest, most buttery, instantaneously gratifying sandalwood in existence today. This profile is like a genuine old school 100 year aged Mysore and the beauty here absolutely decimates anything our competitors are offering – Indian, Japanese, Sri Lankan, it doesn’t matter, this sandalwood is an absolute MONSTER and gives you hit after hit of that delicious BUTTERY CREAMY GORGEOUS SOUL CALMING SANDALWOOD GOODNESS.
I am a sandalwood-head, it is my favourite aromatic, I’ve traded more vintage qualities than most and I am convinced that if you want those big voluptuous creamy woody vibes, they are here in ways you will never find in that French corporation Indian plantation flat as a pancake 20 or 30 year old underdeveloped dross. This is what a real sandalwood grail smells like, a genuine bonified grail that is insanely addictive – when you use this, you wont be able to go back, this will become the work horse trophy piece in your collection. And you even save money as its not expensive and you will use less in your formulations to achieve superior results. This is such a no brainer situation.
People buy sandalwoods nowadays and age them out – well here you don’t even need to do that, as profile wise I repeat this is like that of a 100 year aged Mysore Vintage E.O – and I’ve traded 3 such batches in the past 6 years and I’d choose this Papuan every time.
Remember our 2019 Christmas release of sandalwood India Gold, remember the commentary saying I’d knocked it out of the park and how so many of you truly perceived it as being the grail in your sandalwood collections. Or how about my sandalwood E.O 1936 or sandalwood Musk 1960 or even our recent sandalwood Legends part 1 and 2 – the latter of which sold real fast. Well listen really carefully, everything considered, what I have here is the best sandalwood we have ever had in our possession.
THE BUTTERY ASPECTS IN THIS ARTISAN SANDALWOOD PROFILE ARE ON AN ENTIRELY OTHER LEVEL OF SUPERIORITY WHEN COMPARED WITH THOSE FRENCH CORPORATE SOURCED DULL INDIAN PLANTATION SANDALWOODS.
To talk you through the gears, it’s simple, you apply to skin or strip, you give this about 3 minutes to fire up properly and then for the next 10 hours on my skin type and 18 hours on strip – in absolute pristine optimal form – you get never ending creamy buttery sandal woodiness and nothing else – maybe deer musk grain tonalities in the dry down. No fatty or weedy aspects, no flatlining, just an insanely heavenly creamy MASCULINE powerful woody range of tonalities that will wow everyone that adores sandalwood.
If it counts for anything, I had an artisan oud rockstar visit recently here in Tuscany – he has moved into the artisan natural perfume scene but he is someone that has played a crucial role in bringing artisan ouds to the Western world. In fact if you truly know the artisan oud scene, then you absolutely know his name. Well this chap also occasionally trades sandalwoods and so I thought it would be fitting to show him this upcoming release. Few words, I just said what do you think of this sandalwood. His opinion was that this is a stunning vintage Mysore sandalwood. The expression on his face when I told him this is actually Papuan sandalwood was genuine disbelief. And that’s the thing here, unless told, you’d never ever believe it was possible. But that’s the power of CO2 extractions and something I have banged on about for years – CO2 extracts are total gamechangers for the sandalwood profile – they turn everything upside down in a good way.
So why buy this, well if the reasons above are not enough how about this – the buttery aspects smell 1000x better throughout compared to Indian S.album aromatics, it costs less than plantation Indian aromatics, it doesn’t flatline as soon as you apply it to your skin, it’s brighter throughout, it is full bodied, trees used at least 60 years of age, santalols content comes in at 76%, its straightforward to understand and utilise effectively, it has all the paperwork – SDS-IFRA-Fragrance Allergens, it’s an insane beastly work horse, it has all of those spirit calming and wellbeing qualities that sandalwood is renowned for in spades and buckets, 10x projection compared with Indian sandalwood essential oils, its also a true genuine artisanal production – opposed to the soulless corporate profit-first Indian sandalwood aromatics from these French corporations that flood the Western perfumery landscape like processed junk food.
And to the artisan perfumers reading, the person behind this, he is one of you, and so here not only do you get a better product profile wise, but you support a fellow artisan. And if you want support Hermitage Oils, after evaluation, please support the cause and leave a little or long review!”

Wow, this is definitely in my top 3 of Sandalwood oil. This has to be the best if not one of the best Sandalwood oils out there. Just superb in its creamy nature, sweet and rich in aroma. I can understand how some would say this is vintage Mysore, but CO2 extract is definitely changing the game. It makes this Papuan SW so much better, you can smell every bit of molecule, thats show clear and rich this SW oil is. The price is definitely worth it, for the quality and amount its a no brainer. I’d love to get more of this again in the near future, thank you so much.

Its very very creamy and woody, absolutely my favourite one. The price is also top, for those qualities.. You won’t find it cheaper I think.

Reading Adam’s description, I was instantly sold. Having smelled only Australian and New Caledonian qualities, I never really knew what S. album was all about. Gladly, I bought this CO2 extract instead of some “French corporate-sourced Indian plantation” oil that so many people’s noses struggle to detect.
Now, I’m not a big fan of the dill-pickle profile that Santalum spicatum has or of that perfumery trend in general. Though I do understand why most brands prefer Australian oil, and I can’t blame them: it’s long-lasting, nicely projecting, and relatively inexpensive. But when it comes to sandalwood, I believe it should above all be about that deep woodiness and the creamy texture we all worship.
This Papuan CO2 gives you exactly that. Sawdust, creaminess, a slightly musky undertone, and the body of aged wood to the point where it even smells a bit nutty. I can only imagine what vintage Mysore sandalwood must smell like, but I feel I’m getting that same creamy, masculine, powerful woody character here. This is far from being just a base note, it shines with the same intensity as Australian oil. And yeah, no urinal notes at all.
On the spectrum from New Caledonian where I detect no dill or pickles to Australian, where I smell them a lot, this Papuan CO2, just as Javanol, sits right in the middle. The nuance is low enough not to overpower the entire scent, yet high enough to give this extract a strong radiance.

It seems that this luscious and truly luxurious Papuan Sandalwood essence has evoked universal adulation and inspired all the customers before me to exhaust all the complimenting descriptions, so I can only join in full agreement to the praise for its fabulous fragrance:
its show-opening indulgent Creaminess is full-gourmand patisserie delight – silky, generous folds-upon-folds – highlighted with caramelized edges – like Catalan Flan;
its juicy and sumptious Wooden core – while projecting mature, aristocratic sophistication of sacred tree, posesses a surprising Youthful character, expressed in a fresh-‘greenish’ pulse to it (gently spiced with a earthy-greenery touch of imaginary Costus and Angelica roots) –
as if an ancient noble family were to be represented by its youngest, dashing handsome prince, full of vibrancy, virile vitality and bouncy stride, yet with a quiet awareness of the deep history behind, lofty status and dazzling fortune – hence the impeccably polished manner of the delivery from start to finish –
of all that plenitude of the beguiling Musky-pheromonic undertones in addition to the lavish and effusive Wood core of the scent.
Such easy and ovewhemling Charm, such tasteful Elegance and the sheer redolent Power are so much more impressive on a CO2 and not-Mysore extract!!
Indeed exhilarating Sandalwood Spectacle – par excellence!

This is the best sandalwood oil I’ve seen at anything close to this price point, which is often the case with the offerings here at Hermitage. But this is a different order of magnitude with its powerful woody, musky creaminess and astonishing longevity. No off-notes, no sourness, just the good stuff in overwhelming abundance. I can’t wait to see what else this producer has up their sleeve!

A modern heir to vintage Mysore — radiant, creamy, and profoundly refined. This Papuan Sandalwood opens with polished woods and soft vanilla, unfolding in hours of buttery warmth and quiet strength.
From Papuan soil rises a vintage soul — the golden breath of sandalwood, reborn. A fragrance of quiet power and timeless composure. Buttery, luminous, endlessly serene — a true grail of sandalwood reborn through CO₂ artistry. CO₂ extraction reveals its full, velvety soul — smooth, enduring, and authentic – warmth, refinement, and authenticity in perfect equilibrium.
Its projection is bright yet grounded; its body full and harmonious. A true workhorse for the connoisseur and perfumer alike — one that delivers both aesthetic pleasure and practical superiority in formulation.
In essence: a sandalwood of rare distinction — rich, meditative, profoundly human. A fragrance that doesn’t only perform, but persuades.

A very good sandalwood, reminiscent of mysore, light, innocent, but with some more body to it and less urinal notes.
It’s not the one kind that sits in the bottom of the bottle like Indian legend pt.3 or indo gold, it fires up like a shotgun.
I would say it took the best of the innoscent mysore and the deep and smooth indo gold/indian legend 3 and found a balance.

The focus is on buttery, creamy, milky sweetness, soft musk and woods. So profile-wise, from all the sandalwoods I’ve tried here, it’s most similar to the Indonesian Gold CO2 — which is further backed by the impression that both aren’t as spicy or nutty as other sandalwoods, which I MUCH prefer. It’s also super smooth.
What separates it most from the Indonesian though is that it doesn’t have that bright top note, and more importantly, the longevity and overall density are better. So it’s safe to say this is a new favorite of mine ! Especially for the price – I hope this production remains available to us for a long time with similar quality.
Thanks to Hermitage for this excellent sandalwood
