Arctander has this to say “Tonka bean absolute is a semi-solid or crystalline mass of pale amber or pale brownish-yellow color. Its odor is very rich, sweet and warm, distinctly coumarinic-herbaceous, with a prune-like or carmellic-sweet undertone. The absolute consists of from 20 to 45% coumarin, but the effect of a true tonka absolute goes far beyond that of the coumarin contained in the absolute. In this fact lies the explanation for the continuous use of tonka absolute today, almost after a century after the appearance of synthetic coumarin on the perfume and flavour market.
Tonka absolute is used as a fixative and non-floral sweetener which introduces warm notes in chypres, fougeres, new mown hay bases, lavender bouqets, Oriental bases etc. It blends very well with lavender, lavandin, clary sage, flouve, phenylacetates, salicylates, cinnamates, styrax products, heliotropine, bergamot, oakmoss products, geranylesters, citronellylesters, menthylesters, etc.”
The large seeds which are known as tonka beans are solvent extracted, the colour is sandy beige and of a very thick to solid consistency. If you submerge the bottle in hot water the material will eventually become pourable. We now also offer Venezuelan material.

This is a great staple tonka absolute to have in one’s organ, its not too overbearing as I’ve found with other tonka materials it’s quite tame in comparison dare I say it! This slightly muted aspect means it can blend harmoniously more easily with other materials so I find. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still very much full power tonka it just has a smoothness I find easier to work with.

Much calmer and a bit more rounded than Venezuelan offering (both are awesome, though). Slightly propolisy with interesting marzipan-like emphasis, hay abundant, of course and sweet and warm throughout. Spring turning to summer, yummy loveliness.
