Benzoin Absolute
Adam Michael has this to say “Benzoin absolute, if you are familiar with this material you know it is a sticky-solid resinous fragrant mass and rather challenging to get into a pourable state and even added to alcohol it can still take months before you have a perfect dilution, yes months albeit depending on who you buy the absolute from. Easier to handle versions exist from the big corporates that dilute with ease but mostly I find these offerings are Sumatran material which aromatically in resin or liquid form I like far less than Siam. Siam is the more vanillic creamy sweet of the two origins and Sumatra is to my nose more cinnamic themed. For this reason – and as of 22nd January 2026 – we now offer this absolute diluted at 50% in TEC and of Siam origin. Wholesale weights offered are for the pure and solid material.
We also offer Benzoin resinoid in DPG and provided to us through a well respected Grasse based naturals producer and reseller.
Aromatically, layered on the strip and you are rewarded with creamy sweet vanillic introduction that slowly morphs into a rich balsamic through to slight woody and sweet-floral affair. As time progresses you will detect spiced hues, lots of warmth presented as a mash up of vanilla, spices, hits of clove buds and cinnamon and the next as mentioned here already, softer notes comparable to pulped coconuts. Benzoin absolute is not an overly strong smelling material, base note orientated with little to no top that has excellent fixative qualities, lasting hundreds of hours on the smell strip. Uses, very versatile actually, goes hand in hand when building gourmand bases, supports roses accords and amber bases, pairs great with vanillic aromatics, jasmines, ylangs, frankincense, more so rivae over carterii in my opinion, opoponax, myrrh, patchoulis and many woods too.

The description of this material really reflects my olfactory experience of it. It is vanillic, creamy and has a soft sweet scent. This was a new discovery for me and I am really happy I ordered it. This product needs to be properly heated though in order for it to be used. I lifted some of it out of the bottle with a small spoon and added it to another bottle with alcohol in which it dissolved very well.

That smell is wonderful and it found its place as a fixative for my florals, can be pretty easily be overshadowed by the Peru balsam offered here which is a powerhouse. Also do not have the substantivity of that one which makes me sad because I find it somewhat more refined, less in your face !

A treasure from Laos ! This abs is really close to the classical tincture that you can get from your pharmacist, with its comforting medicinal and herbal aspects. The lovely bonus here is that, while remaining a very long lasting base note, it brings warmth to the heart note with an exotic floral impression. Not “gourmand” in any way, although it has a vanillic facet, but close to an ylang absolute with an animalic touch of coconut in it. I would call this a “solar” note.
