Adam Michael has this to say “Today is 2nd June 2020 and this is my fifth offering of oud and my first wild oud offering, purchased from a private collection, 8 years aged (currently 12, as I update on 13th May 2024) distilled in a copper pot and hailing from Phuket in Thailand. Within 30 minutes of smelling this I had purchased the lot and guaranteed Hermitage exclusivity. I would imagine all of us would expect a lot from this aromatically if you look at the price. But you would be disappointed, so much so that I’ll say if you want ouds with lots of evolution, then sincerely you could stick with the plantation Laos, Cambodi and Prachin that we offer, as they cost a fraction of the price, are more diffusive, provide a kaleidoscope of scent and are of better longevity.
Aromatically layered on my wrist (or smelling from the vial/or swipe stick) the aroma profile is rich woody, exotic fruit basket ripe fruity, rich pine resinous fruity – something blue berry like – with soft trace menthol and incense spice hues plus noticeable resinous peppery aspects deep in its base that come through properly via the strip after a few days. That is it for the entire duration, nothing more, and nothing less. 1000% clean (ZERO barn and skank notes), smooth, elegant, addictive, and joyous.
This is a Wild Thai material yet manages to DNA-echo and surpass that of some of the finest Wild Borneo Ouds I have sampled from the few artisan producers regarded as gods, who no doubt will be reading this, and for the record in a professional capacity have my deepest respect and admiration. But yes, what we have here is in that sphere, no plantation ouds are going to age like this, they can never exude aged seductive beauty to this level, simple as that.
Longevity on my skin stands at around 2 and half to 3 hours from a small swipe, and no clouds of oud will be created, this is a close to skin and intimate one on one affair.
Should you sample, prior to ever applying to your skin, (and should you want to know why this was instant love for me) then I would encourage you to find yourself a moment of quiet time, leave the material in the glass vial, partially remove/lift out the swipe stick, hold the glass vial with partially removed swipe stick under your nose, and slowly inhale and exhale this stunning wild oud aroma for 5 to 10 minutes. To sum up the best offering of oud I have to date offered and one that betters the vast majority of wild ouds I have sampled elsewhere.”

The Thai signature gold oud certainly confirms its namesake, exhibiting a pure golden radiant nature. The experience smelling this oud is so pleasant and inoffensive in any way that you’ll find yourself inhaling deeper and deeper until your entire olfactory system is reverberating with purified golden oud incense. Among all the other highest end oud’s I’ve tried this definitely defines its own category in terms of an oud so gentle, yet rich and addicting that you could endlessly hold it to your nose with not only zero fatigue, but with the notes actually building in richness. I like to imagine that if there is ever a natural isolate extracted from prized fractions of aquilaria, similar to santalol and ambrettolide, it might smell something like this. To my nose I pick up some fascinating honey-floral notes of rare old bush oolong, gardenia, and honeyuckle. An absolute must try for any oud collector.

I received this in the mail today and my first impression is that this enjoyable, fresh, smooth and pleasing right from the beginning. Typically, my experience with average ouds is that it takes time before I can stand them (usually a sign of lower quality and/or young age). Ouds are deep and complex, so I will write a more detailed review as I continue to evaluate its character. First impression is its gentle nature, well aged, dark, and lightly-sweet woody character.
